I was fortunate to have the opportunity to have a week long session with international horseman and clinician Cody Deering. His multifaceted approach to education includes discussion of vaquero history and equipment, groundwork demonstrations that directly relate to riding, and practical application of these concepts under saddle in both arenas and working environments.
I rode a variety of horses and each one developed my personal awareness of feel to a deeper understanding. This experience filled in gaps for me, promoted an even greater awareness of the horse’s balance, and how weight shifts influence movement. This experience elevated my awareness of how much my focus and intention influences the horses I’m riding as well as the cattle I’m working around. This approach promotes low stress handing of both.
There was an emphasis on setting up the horse in balance and then allowing the horse to follow through with the job.
Cody’s teaching style provides the student with a variety of experiences while allowing room for students to experiment knowing that the support is there when they need it.
I have a tendency to zoom in so much I lose sight of the full picture at times. I lean towards perfectionism and do not like when I make mistakes. Cody’s philosophy of asking “What does the horse do if I do this?” and “What does the horse think of this?” really helps me navigate through those personal struggles.
Cody’s extensive knowledge of vaquero traditions and horsemanship does not prevent him from introducing humor and levity into the learning process.
